Translation Volunteers Needed in Tampa for February Delegation

We still need volunteers to assist with a delegation of Japanese citizens who will be visiting the area in February.

The Clearwater Sister Cities program is receiving a delegation from Nagano City from 2/8 - 2/11 and has asked us if we can provide volunteers to help them communicate.  There are opportunities for formal translation between government delegations and informal opportunities to assist the citizen members in conversation, shopping, etc.

A very few of you have already volunteered, so thank you to those people, but I know many more of you speak both languages well enough to participate.  You can select the events you are available to do throughout the 4 days.  Even one small event will help.

If I can do it, so can you!  Please contact me soon if you'd like to help.

Thanks,
John.

IUC Nippon Foundation Fellowship Program 2015-16

To whom it may concern,

I hope that this mail finds you doing well.

I am writing a mail because I would like to ask you to share the information about the IUC Nippon Foundation Fellowship Program 2015-16.  Needless to explain, but the IUC (Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies) is one of the leading Japanese language institute for highest level of Japanese.  Since 2013, the Nippon Foundation has offered fellowships to 10 promising graduate students of Japan Studies doctorate courses in the US, who participated 10 months Japanese language training course in Yokohama.

The Nippon Foundation has decided to expand the number of grantees from 10 to 20, and also to extend the scope of the program from Japanese Studies to Professional Schools such as law, MBA, governmental officials, journalists and so on.  This is a new initiative that will start from 2016, and IUC has recently made announcement for the application from potential candidates.  I suppose that this program will be appealing to some of JETAA members who want to seek for their professional career paths that are related to Japan.

I truly appreciate it if you kindly share the information of this program with your community and partner organizations, and also publicize it on your website and newsletter.  I believe that this program would be a strong basis for nurturing next generation leaders who will bridge US-Japan relationship.

You may find more details about the program in the following website;

If you have any questions, please contact IUC secretariat; iucjapan@stanford.edu.

With best wishes,

Job/Teacher Training: Urban Teacher Center (UTC)

Posted by admin

The following is from Kerry Swarr, Director of Human Capital at Urban Teacher Center:

The Urban Teacher Center (UTC) is a four-year, alternative teacher preparation program that operates in the Washington, DC region (and soon in additional cities).  Each cohort participates in an intensive year-long residency, followed by a three-year teaching commitment in a high-need urban elementary, middle or high school.  UTC residents prepare to become highly competent teachers; in addition to the clinical experience, they also enroll in a Master’s of Education program that is directly relevant to the urban teacher.  All UTC teachers are part of an unprecedented commitment to student performance:  only those who can demonstrate that they can improve student learning will complete the program.  Over time, UTC teachers will be among the most expert and results-oriented in the nation.   For more information, visit us on the web at www.urbanteachercenter.org.
Our upcoming application deadlines for the 2012-13 school year are: October 15, 2011, December 15, 2011, February 15, 2012, April 15, 2012 and May 15, 2012.  The program for the 2012-2013 school year will begin in late June 2012.  The application is available via the UTC website at www.urbanteachercenter.org.
