Review: This is a very tiny Asian market but I always seem to find exactly what I'm looking for. Most notably, I have found: Umeboshi, udon and dashi, furikake, instant ramen, vinegar for making sushi, rice ball molds and who could ever forget the endless supply of Ramune and Pocky.

Review: It's a rather large supermarket with a wide assortment of kitchen-stuffs, dry goods and numerous foodstuffs. The fridges are stocked with both frozen and fresh goodies and the supermarket gets Asian vegetables in twice a month (call ahead to be sure). There's also a periodical/book section, an alcohol section and the well known sushi bar/restaurant area run by the owner and daughter.

This supermarket has been here for a number of years and the owner is well established in the area. As often happens in this situation, the location can either gain in reputation or go downhill, and I have to say the later seems evident. The owner has been steadily raising his prices, even on sauces and Asian items found in other Asian supermarkets or your nearby Publix (even in the month I visited twice). Present and former customers have said the sushi quality and size has been decreasing and the owner has been less than polite to other customers when a native Japanese is present (talks more, bigger portions). So far I've eaten there twice, saw the rudeness once and the fish quality was far better, yet much smaller, than most Thai/sushi places everywhere in South Florida.

Review:  They have a nice assortment of Japanese kitchen basics on the shelves and in the fridges. The sushi counter is packed everyday at lunch and a steady stream of to-go orders, which is funny because there is a Japanese restaurant 3 stores down, so you know this place is doing something right. I sampled the combo plate to test the chef (and watched him make it) - the sashimi was well cut; nice assortment of fresh and frozen, and the sushi was well done also. Hamachi was great and salmon was melt in your mouth. I didn't try the rolls - not my thing. Miso soup was as authentic as it gets! I had a nice chat with the couple that ran the place. They were very polite and friendly.

Review: Sasaya is a small Japanese market in Fort Lauderdale.  While very small, it has a good selection of Japanese basics that are hard to find in the Miami area.  On our last visit we purchased a variety of sauces, curry, and the like.  They also have a refrigerated section with things like tofu, pickled goods, and drinks.

There is a sushi bar here as well, which gets good recommendations even though I haven't yet had a chance to try it.

On the whole, I wouldn't drive from Miami where I live to Fort Lauderdale just to go here, but if I am in the area I will definitely stop by.

Review:  Lucky is not really known for its customer service. Expiration dates need to be checked, and there's a funky smell from the produce section. However, they have a fairly good selection of rice, and a pretty good variety of prepackaged Japanese supplies (Japanese curry, sweets, nori, senbei, etc...). There is also a small selection of cooking and dining supplies.
