Postdoctoral Fellowship for Transregional Research: Inter-Asian Contexts and ConnectionsThe broad focus of the program is intended to advance transregional research as well as to establish structures for linking scholars across disciplines in the arts, the humanities, and the social sciences. Fifteen fellowships will be awarded over the two-year course of the pilot program. February 132012 is the pilot year for this program. See FAQ page.
International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF)The International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) offers nine to twelve months of support to graduate students in the humanities and social sciences who are enrolled in doctoral programs in the United States and conducting dissertation research outside of the United States. AAS Northeast Asia Council (NEAC) Japan Studies GrantsThe Northeast Asia Council (NEAC) of the Association for Asian Studies, in conjunction with the Japan-US Friendship Commission, supports a variety of grant programs in Japanese studies designed to facilitate the research of individual scholars, to improve the quality of teaching about Japan on both the college and precollege levels, and to integrate the study of Japan into the major academic disciplines. Asia Responsive Grants Asia Responsive Grants provide opportunities to improve understanding between the United States and the Asia-Pacific region. These grants typically support research, create new scholarly and public resources, or promote the exchange of ideas and information between Americans and Asians. Luce Initiative on Asian Studies and the EnvironmentLIASE, administered by the Foundation’s Asia Program, is a competition for invited liberal arts colleges and liberal arts college consortia in the United States. LIASE aspires to encourage innovative approaches to Asian studies teaching and research at the undergraduate level through the lens of the environment and sustainable development. Blakemore Freeman Fellowships Blakemore Freeman Fellowships are awarded for one year of advanced level language study in East or Southeast Asia in approved language programs. Boren Awards for International StudyBoren Fellowships encourage U.S. graduate students to add an important language component to their educations.Boren Awards for International StudyTerm and funding depends upon each proposal.January 31Boren Fellowship applicants design their own programs and may combine domestic language study with overseas study or research. Study of a foreign language appropriate to the identified country or region must be an integral part of each application proposal.
Multi-Country Research Fellowshipupports advanced regional or trans-regional research in the humanities, social sciences, or allied natural sciences for U.S. doctoral candidates and scholars who have already earned their Ph.D. Preference will be given to candidates examining comparative and/or cross-regional research. Applicants are eligible to apply as individuals or in teams.

Scholars must carry out research in two or more countries outside the United States, at least one of which hosts a participating American overseas research center.

Academy Scholars ProgramThe Academy Scholars Program offers 2-year research support for advanced doctoral and post-doctoral scholars in the social sciences, history and law working in non-Western areas of the world. These are open to scholars of all nationalities. Those in possession of a Ph.D. longer than 3 years are ineligible.Harvard University2-year appointment. Post-doctoral Academy Scholars will receive an annual stipend of $56,000, and pre-doctoral Academy Scholars will receive an annual stipend of $28,000. This stipend is supplemented by funding for conference and research travel, research assistants, and health insurance coverage. Some teaching is permitted but not required.December 9The competition for these awards is open only to recent Ph.D. (or comparable professional school degree) recipients and doctoral candidates. Those still pursuing a Ph.D. should have completed their routine training and be well along in the writing of their theses before becoming Academy Scholars; those in possession of a Ph.D. longer than 3 years are ineligible.
Fellowships in International StudiesThe Library of Congress, the Association of American Universities, and the American Council of Learned Societies are pleased to sponsor the Library of Congress Fellowships in International Studies. The singular collaboration of these three organizations underlines their commitment to scholarship in international studies.The Library of Congress4-9 months of residence in Washington, DC in order to use the foreign language collections of the Library of Congress.

Fellows will occupy research space in the Library's new John W. Kluge Center, and will be part of the Center's regular programming.
Approximately ten Fellows will be selected through a national, peer-reviewed selection process administered by the American Council of Learned Societies. The program is designed for postdoctoral scholars who are at an early stage of their career, within seven years of their degree. Research projects in the history, language, culture, politics, economics, and other disciplines of the humanities and social sciences that further understanding of the global partners of the United States will be welcome, as will multi-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary proposals, and proposals focused on single or multiple geographical areas.
Henry Luce Foundation Resident Scholar FellowshipOne nine-month fellowship is available for a postdoctoral Asian or American scholar whose research focuses on East Asia or Southeast Asia.
